Teachers’ Challenges in Promoting Learner Autonomy

: The concept of learner autonomy has garnered significant attention from scholars, educators, policy makers, and researchers across various countries. However, In Indonesia, the body research dedicated to is still growing, with specific needed identify potential obstacles that might deter its promotion. This study, therefore, aims delve into socio-cultural challenges encountered by secondary school teachers when fostering autonomy.This investigation crucial, as influences appear be a barrier for English Foreign Language (EFL) students in Indonesia. study adopted qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing purposive sampling technique select participants based on criteria. These included senior high over five years experience at their respective schools, who were also willing participate interviews. total, six different schools within single Indonesian province contributed this study. data collected through semi-structured interviews, teachers' responses quoted interpreted light analysis supporting theories relevant literature. findings revealed three primary barriers impeding promotion autonomy: (1) due language issues, (2) related limited worldview, (3) institutional barriers. implies promoting learning requires adjustments teaching strategies, curriculum design, policies. Research suggestions are provided further address limitation current study.
